Hello potters,
You are to practice writing your artist statement. An artist's statement is a brief verbal representation created by the artist about his or her own work. It should be personal and based on your specific work in Pottery Class. An example is below. Can you guess who the artist is?
What is it about creation that brings such joy? It's a need that has existed since prehistoric times when cave artists used their blood and spit to leave images behind. It becomes so interwoven with everyday life that some cultures have no word for art. It's my addiction, causing pain, anxiety, and agitation if I go too long without my "fix'. I am a mixed media artist that plays with fabric, decorative papers, beads, sand, and other materials. My work begs for you to touch it. My themes bring the past into the present. I recreate the goddesses of many cultures, merge past marks with modern graffiti, and rewrite the fairytale females I grew up with.
Homework is due Friday, April 27.

Throughout pottery class I have learned who I am as a potter. The type of pieces I prefer to do, the glazes that I like, and the different techniques that I believe work the best. I try to bring my pieces to “life” in a sense, whether it’s with the shapes or the glazes that are involved in the process. When I pick most glazes I tend to lean towards the blues and greens which can often be replaced by water and grass. The colors are often calm and soothing as well. I like the process of using different mold pieces and how they give you an opportunity to get different shapes that would be challenging to get without a mold. As a beginning potter I’ve learned that I’m not very picky with my work just with how the colors turn out on my piece after leaving the kiln.

My artwork is very ogriginal. I do not have a specific way of creating my artwork, I just kind of make what comes to my mind that day, and A lot of my artwork relies on what mood I am in when I am creating a piece. I like to create fun shapes, and bright colors.

My artwork is very explosive, literally. The majority of my hand built pieces blow so I have developed a knack for spur of the moment creations. I turn my blown pieces into creative mixed media artwork. When it comes to my bowls they are generally uneven or have some sort of ripple in them. I love to improvise on my clay creations.

Imagine a world where you can't touch anything, where you can't build anything, how would that world look like?
Thankfully, the world I've created for me is a hands on world where you build things with your hands and create things on your own. I like building things with my own hands, they can be abstract pieces or concrete pieces depending on my mood. I make things that have a connection to my life; the themes vary from Finnish cultural pieces to funny sculptures of my favorite Game Boy games from when I was younger.
My life is hands on and full of creativity and I love it.

Ellie - I think it's awesome how you turn your explosive pieces into mixed media artwork. After you've turned the piece into something completely different do you tend to have texture or do you smooth your pieces? What colors do you prefer or have an interest in?

Kim - I think mood always relies a lot on how you make your pieces which can make your pieces unique. What kind of fun shapes do you like to create? What bright colors do you prefer to use?

My peices I create them off of others creation but I twist them and make new ones. They each have their own personality, they each tell their own legacy. They all are free flowing peices of art that stand out against each other.

Dillon- What kind of shapes do you like to create? Is there any technique you use when you are creating your pieces? I can relate to painting the bottom of the pieces, i like my work even and usable also.

Ellie,
i like how creative you are even when most of your pieces explode. I think to fix the exploding you should smooth out your pieces a little bit more. Keep up the good work, and creative ideas!

My art is an attempt to display color and form in an appealingly way. I also explore the different possibilities with the clay and what it can become through the choice of materials I choose to use. I don’t usually have my mind set on one particular thing when I create my art, but let the art work guide me and then begin to think of ideas and create what I imagine. Ever since I started working with pottery I have been fascinated by the techniques and different ways to use the clay. What starts out just as vision in your imagination soon becomes a peace created on the wheel or being hand built. At first when trying to center the clay on the wheel for my first time I got so frustrated with it. Now I feel it as a challenge to take over that clay and make it what I want it to be with a little guidance from the clay itself. I also noticed I had the tendency to always pull something beautiful, but want to create more with it; there are just things that should be left alone put it that way. As skillful results become connected through quiet, calm, soothing personal practice, the viewer is left with a visualization of what the artist can create.

The type of potter that I am is unclear to me, but one thing that is clear is what I like. The techniques I use are my own and I don’t like to follow protocol when it comes to pottery. I do what feels good to me and what works for me. Pottery is filled with so many possibilities and they are endless. When creating something with my own hands it gives me the opportunity to express myself in so many ways. Like everyone else, I have strengths and I also have weaknesses. The cool thing about pottery is that I can make my weaknesses into something extravagant. Pottery is such a great way to make the best of something because when you make a mistake it could turn out to be the best piece you’ve ever made. I like to use a variety of colors when glazing and I like to make it my own. When I’m on the wheel I’m in sort of a trance and it brings me to a state of relaxation and I can block the rest of the world out. So what kind of potter am I? I have no idea. One thing that I do know is that I am unique, as is everyone else.

Kim- Give your artist statement a little more depth. What makes your pottery original? What kind of shapes and colors do you like using? This is a great start, but definitely add on to it and make it more personal.

Gabriella- I love your usage of words and how you talked about your pottery. I think it is very cool that you have to make spur of the moment changes and that’s what makes it so interesting. Sometimes the best pieces come from accidents or mistakes. The only suggestion I have for you is to add a little more to your statement. Good job though!

Austin I think that you should mention something about your teapot because you worked really hard on it...Other then that I like how you mention your pieces have their own personalities and each tell their own stories.

Ellie I like how you took your pieces that have exploded and mentioned something about them... I must say that clay must not like you... You'll have to whip it into shape : ) other then that I like how you go about making things out of your exploded pieces.
