Hello Pottery Students.
It may be hard to imagine but the clay you use does not come from the store; the origins go beyond there. Please view the following 2 Youtube videos that show how you can dig your own clay.

Now answer the following questions:
Why would it be beneficial to dig your own clay versus buying it? Do you think that all potters should learn this process? Why? Would you want to go out and dig your own local clay?
Your homework is due Friday, January 28.

It would be beneficial to dig your own clay instead of purchasing it because you wouldn’t there wouldn’t be a cost to digging your own. I think that it would be interesting/helpful for all potters to experience the digging process because it shows you the history and makes you well aware of the digging process. I think it would be pretty neat to go out and dig local clay just to say that you’ve done it before.
I'll Have to agree with Sara, it would be a lot cheaper, and you also wouldn't have to deal with waiting for your clay to come in from the mail if you have ordered it. Fresh clay also might be easier to build with, and might give you some new ideas as you work.
I think it would be beneficial to dig my own clay versus buying it because you don’t have to pay anything to do it. It would be a lot less expensive. I do believe that all potters should learn this process because if they are in a time where they don’t have much money, they could use this process instead of going out and purchasing their own clay. I would go out and dig my own clay because I think it would be fun. Also, sometime I would like to go dig my own clay and maybe create a hand-built piece without cleaning the clay. I think it would be interesting to see the different textures that would be in the piece.
I think it would be benefical for you to dig your own clay because its cost effiecent. If your gonna be a true potter it only makes sence for you to work with the earth . I would want to dig my own clay because I would like for what I make to come from where I live.
I have to agree with Sara I think it would be economically beneficial to dig your own clay but also beneficial for the environment. Getting/digging local clay would be better for the environment because you never know from where or how the clay you buy is made and all of that which usually are bad for the environment so that's why I also think that all potters should do it or at least try it! I could do it and again I have to agree with Sara I think it would be a cool thing to say that you've done!
It would be good to dig you clay because it would be Cheeper but if clay gets to a point that digging your clay is too much work and time that you would rather buy your clay. I think all potters should learn the skill no matter if they are going to use that skill or not. I would dig my own clay because I like to save money.
Digging your own clay would benifit you more than purchasing it because it would be cheaper. Also if you need clay and there is no local store it would save you alot just to make it rather then wait on shipping orders. I think someone who wants to become skilled in the art of pottery should learn how to make their own clay as well as different building techniques.I would love to dig my own clay once, but not all the time because it seems to be a very time consuming process.
I think digging up our own clay is beneficial and a lot cheaper. Not only that, but if you dig it yourself your probably being more eco friendly. If you are a person that loves to use pottery I would recommend digging up your own clay and cleaning it that way you save money. It might be time consuming, but it is all worth it in the long run especially if you are just beginning.
