Hello Pottery Students.
It may be hard to imagine but the clay you use does not come from the store; the origins go beyond there. Please view the following 2 Youtube videos that show how you can dig your own clay.

Now answer the following questions:
Why would it be beneficial to dig your own clay versus buying it? Do you think that all potters should learn this process? Why? Would you want to go out and dig your own local clay?

It could be beneficial to you knowing that you made the clay yourself instead of going to the store and buying clay that someone else made.
I think that it should be up to the potters if they want to learn it or not, but if they did learn this process it could help them in the future. you don't know maybe the store could run out of clay when you really need it.
I really don't see myself walking along the stream and digging for clay. i think that it is pretty cool how he dug up the clay and all the steps he went through, but i don't think i would like to do that. i think i will stick to the store's.
It would be beneficial to dig your own clay rather than buying it because it could save you a lot of money and is kind of like recycling.
I think it would be useful for potters to learn this process because if you needed clay and there wasn't any around your area in stores, you could just go make your own, even though it is quite a lot of work, it could help you in your future to know how to make your own clay.
I would not like to dig my own clay. The reason being is it is a lot of work and is very time consuming. I don't have much time for anything, so there's no way I'll have time to make my own clay. I think for people that have time and enjoy it, should make their own.
It would be beneficial to dig your own clay rather than buying at a store because it would save you money. If you’re looking to go green, then that’s the way to go but personally for me, I don’t see the amount of work and effort you have to put into it being more beneficial than just buying clay. I don’t think all potters should dig their own clay, but yes it’s always good to have a backup way to get materials and to just have the general knowledge on how to be more independent and supply your own materials. I don’t think that I would rather go get my clay out of the ground every single time I would like to go on the wheel, but I think that it could potentially be fun to try once and just learn how to for some background knowledge. -Nikki
Why would it be beneficial to dig your own clay versus buying it? It would be benifical because for one thig it is cheaper to dig for it than it is to buy it, also in some areas there are no stores that sell clay so it may be your only way to get clay without haveing to pay shipping companies to deliver it from out of the area. Do you think that all potters should learn this process? Why? Of course I do I think it would be a good experiance for them to learn how so they can not only save money but learn how clay was made before it was manufactured and delivered to stores. Would you want to go out and dig your own local clay? Of course I would I think it would be a lot of fun to learn how to make it and it would be perfect for me since I don't have the extra money to go out and buy it. I also tink it would be a great learning experiance and as kelly said it is like recycling so it is better for the planet and that sounds wonderfull to me.
This particular proccess involves an extreme ammount of time and most certainly effort. I think that i would be immenselly proud of a piece if I knew that I actually dug it up and made it from scratch.
But I think for now I will rely on the store because I know that the clay coming out of the ground is inexarable.
I think that it would be benificial to dig your own clay because it would save you money from having to buy clay all of the time. I would not want to go out and dig my own clay because it would get time consuming to have to go and dig clay all of the time after you have run out. i do think that all potters should learn this method because if for some reason you can not order clay, you will have the knowledge to go and dig up your own clay to use.
I think diging your own clay up is a very good idea because insted of going and buying 5 or 6 bags of clay, you can just go out and dig your own glay for free. Save more money and i think it would be cool useing your own clay that you got yourself.
Yes, I think that all potters should learn this because it might be handy to have because say for example if your going off to college for pottery this might be a good thing to learn for college.
Yes I would go out and dig my own clay because i know where there is alot of spots that i could get some. I would rather go get my own clay for free instead of spending money and it im going to save money.
