Advanced Wheel Techniques

Hello pottery students. You are all gaining skills on the pottery wheel. I found a great site from Goshen that has lots of techniques for working on the wheel. You will click on the different chapters and the photos to get some helpful hints. Some of the techniques are different from what I have shown you.  To inspire you I have some EXTREME pottery wheel YouTube videos to also watch. Answer the following questions:

1. Tell me about 3 new techniques that you will want to try. Why do you think these will make throwing easier?

2. You saw 6 advanced potters on YouTube. Which one would you most like to be able to do? Why?

Remember that it may be easier to open a Word document and type your answers first, save the Word document, and then copy and paste your answers in the comment section. Remember also to click name/URL and type in your name and then click the "Publish Your Comments" button. Let me know if you encounter any glitches. Good Luck!!!

1. One technique that I would like to try is using a ball shape instead of a Hershey Kiss, I think this may make throwing the clay easier because when I use the Hershey Kiss it seems like it’s already coned for more so it’s almost harder to cupcake the clay. A different technique I would like to also try is the way they actually place the clay on the wheel, they pinch the edges down to the wheel so the clay is more stable and doesn’t fly off and hit the wall. I think it would make it easier because then you simply do have the worry that the clay might slip off. The last technique that I would really enjoy trying and getting better at is the way they open and bring up the walls of the clay. Instead of pressing down with two thumbs like we do, they open the clay by using the left hand as a brace and support system while the right hand presses down and curls in towards the clay. This would make it easier because then you don’t have to worry about pressing harder with one thumb than the other. They bring up the walls at five o’clock instead of three o’clock, so I’d really like to try that.
2. I would like to be able to try the goblet. Because they are very uniquely shaped and you can only make so many bowls for yourself and everyone around you! I think the goblet will be harder to keep centered and to shape, but I would like the challenge. I think the hardest part will be to not break the bottom of the piece while working on the cup because it’s thinner and getting the shape you really want for the top part of the cup. But I think it would be very interesting and fun to try.

1.Tell me about 3 new techniques that you will want to try. Why do you think these will make throwing easier? Three techniques I will want to try are: One, from the first video his tecnique for bringing up the sides of a pot because I Found it may make it easier for me to keep my pots level and I want to try it. Two: from video four the way he brings up his sides, because it may help me with keeping from making my walls to thin and last but not least: three After I have had a bit more practice I will try the technique from video six , because it seems unique to make a pot and it's lid all at once and it would be a great new experience.
2. You saw 6 advanced potters on YouTube. Which one would you most like to be able to do? Why?
I would most like to be able to do a two piece pot of the wheel because it is a different kind of pot and it is an interesting way of making pot's.

1. One of the techniques that I would like to do is the way they put the clay in the wheel by pushing the edges down, so that the water doesn’t go under the clay. I think that this technique would help me because then I don’t have to make sure that it is stuck on the wheel. Another technique that I would like to use is the way you pull it up. The way they pull up is they curl their fingers on the top of the bowl and start at the bottom. As you move up move the pressure to the outside of the bowl. The last technique is how they refining the bowl with the rib. That you can us a rib to make anything, it also cleans the wet slip on the outside at the same time you can refine the form.
2. I would like to try the big vase because I would love to make all different sizes and shape. The reason I would like to do it is because I have seen different kinds and I always would like to make one of them. Some of the thing that could be difficult with making the big vase is the when you are pulling up you have to be very careful not to bind your arm in the wrong direction. Another thing would be when you are trying to get the water out it would be hard because you have to put your hand inside and they drag it up, with out touching the opening.

The three different pottery wheel techniques that I would like to try are:
~ I want to try throwing left handed because I am left handed and I want to try a different way to center on the wheel because I have a hard time now the regular centering.
~I want to try the Opening clay technique because I kind of have a hard time with opening the clay and making sure that I have a thick enough bottom for footing.
~ I want to try removing the vessel technique because I am horrible at removing pottery from the wheel. I always have a huge lip around the outside of my piece on the wheel, and I can not get rid of it.
After watching the six YouTube videos, I would like to learn how to make a pottery flower shaped bowl. I would like to be able to learn how to make one of these because they look really fun to make, and it looks really cool when it is all done.

1.One techniqe that i want to try is trying to use a real big chunk of clay and see how hard it is to center. Because in video 4 the guy is useing a real big chunk and he makes it ito like a donut shape and it centerd real well. The second technique is to learn how they put the clay on the wheel and by pushing the edges down. The last technique that i want to learn is a differnt way of pulling up. Watching these videos gave me some ideas of pulling up that i want to try.

2. After watching these vidoes i learned alot. And the one that i really want to try to do is video 4 when he makes the big vase with a real big chunk of clay. I watch him how he pulled it up and they way that he centerd it.
